I am sure you could do pretty well but the recirculating system gives you total control over PH, PPM, Nute Temp, ETC. plus Nute changes are easy with my setup. My feed lines are 1/2 inch and they come in the bucket at the top on the side and then go down inside to the bottom. Since my buckets are are a raised floor and my res is not when I turn my pupm off all the buckets back siphon to the res while I am pumping it outside so I get 100% nute changes. Another factor is that big plants drink ALOT! These four go through at least 20 gallons a day right now. So if you had one of these by herself in a 5 gallon or even a 20 gallon bucket you would be putting water in every 2 or 3 hour while light are on PITA!!
But seriously, You can build a recirculating system so easy, Even if your only pumping one gallon an hour into the bucket with a tiny tube and even if your res is just another bucket. Just put yout drain about an inch or so below the bottom of the net pot, could be 1/2 inch hose and a little air stone hose to feed it from the top down into the bottom, so easy:

2 buckets
An aquarium powerhead for pump
two rubber grommet from grow shop
Air hose
Air pump
Air stone
Two hose barbs
Net pot
Nutes

Now you are recirculating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
