Man faces drug charge over package containing marijuana

A call about a man who might have taken a Fed Ex package from in front of a city residence last week has led to drug charges.

Gawain Edward Breed, 46, no permanent address, is charged with one count of fifth-degree controlled substance crime. Authorities allege the package he claims was his contained more than a pound of marijuana. Unconditional bail was set at $10,000 and conditional bail, at $5,000. He returns to court Sept. 27.

A neighbor called police late Wednesday morning after seeing a stranger walk away from a neighbor's house in the 1600 block of Second Street Southwest with a package that had been delivered. When stopped by police, Breed said the package was his, and that he had arranged to have it delivered to that address.

Officers tracked down the person identified on the label of the package. He confirmed that he had agreed to have Breed's package delivered to his residence. He also granted police permission to open the package without Breed's knowledge. It turned out to have a pound of marijuana.

When Breed called officers later that day to see if he could get his package, he was told to come to the law enforcement center. He did and immediately was arrested.
