Never move to Louisiana. I'm dead serious.

There are quit a few college students on these boards, high school lurkers, and more accomplished people who may consider relocating for what ever reason. What ever you do, DO NOT MOVE TO LOUISIANA.

Why you might ask? Let me put it this way:

We were looking for an apartment on the south shore (New Orleans area) and the best deal we were able to find was a 360 sq ft. studio for $550 a month. On the Northshore, the average 1 bedroom apartment will cost around $700 a month.

On top of the extreme cost of living, there are NO jobs. While looking at jobs for when I get out of school, I can make $8 an hour with a college degree... Granted there are better, but those jobs are much harder to find. An equivalent job in TX pays $125,000 for an entry level position. And housing is much cheaper, at least from the reality sites are showing me.

The bottom line is this. Under no circumstance should you ever move to this shit-tastic state. The economy seems to be bottoming out, which I suspect, is due to the states long history of political corruption.

Never move here, once I get my degree, I'm moving to Dallas. And this state wonders why so many graduates relocate.

or maybe it just has somethin to do with one of the largest and most powerful and deadly hurricanes to ever make landfall completely sinking it... be a little more sensitive to somethin you obviously know little about.. or rather prefer to use your own experience to generalize an entire community. We don't want you there either.

I Justburn, I'm not sure about you but my family hails from Louisiana. Not the southern part near New Orleans. But the northern part near Shreveport. He was completely accurate in describing the state's long history of political corruption. It's there. It always has been. It always will be. That might have been a generalization. And there are certainly some honorable exceptions. But anyone who knows Louisiana knows its characterization as corrupt is spot-on.

You come on up to Dallas, Jagged. That's where I am. My family moved from Baton Rouge to Texas when I was a baby to seek better employment and a better atmosphere for a family. This place is superficial, politically conservative, money-driven and hot as heck in the summertime. But it's an improvement over Louisiana!

He was using his experience in New Orleans at one of its lowest points to make a generalization. I'm not saying it was wrong. In fact, he's right. But you can at least expect that now given their situation. Yeah go up wherever birdgirl said.. there's always good and bad parts..

Ohio isn't too bad either. It can be really conservative and really fucking cold compared to Arizona and South Carolina where I mostly grew up but it's not too bad and weed isn't too expensive either.

Honestly, I'm getting really sick of all this Katrina crap. I'm not being insensitive, yes some people still haven't fully recovered due to the financial burden, the sudden spike in insurance, and many losing their homes. But continually complaining about Katrina isn't going to fix a god-damn thing. I'm sick of people using Katrina as a basis for their ulterior motives as well as continually blaming every little problem on Katrina.

You can't find a decent job- because of Katrina.
Crime has sky-rocked... oh but it because Katrina.
The cost of living has gone up, all because of Katrina.

I know nothing about Katrina... really. I was here when the thing hit, I didn't have power for 3 weeks, and my asshole boss still expected me to show up for work. The house I was renting had a big oak tree fall through the roof and was looted by some assholes a few blocks over. It's time to move on.

Bad shit happens, constantly focusing on it isn't going to solve anything.

I'm not being insensitive, however, Katrina is not an excuse for the city and states problems.

Secondly, I'm not generalizing nor am I making an off base assumption. The fact of the matter is, jobs don't pay enough when compared to the increased cost of living. There is very little potential when it comes to work considering there are very few companies in this state. Yes there are other jobs, but not for what field I will be entering. On top of that, public service jobs are equally as bad, if not worse.

The teachers don't get paid enough and work in a very hostile environment. In particular, I'm referring to Orleans Parish public schools. The nurses get dicked around and are receive worse benefits and pay than in it's neighboring state of TX.

Honestly, the only good thing for this area is plantwork.

Yes there are some exceptions, everything has something good to offer. But when it comes to surviving, I would have to rate this area very low.

EDIT: I apologize if the tone of the above post is aggressive. I'm just at my wits end with all this Katrina stuff. Everyone uses it as an excuse, and its really getting old. My University just felt the need to dedicate a very insensitive fountain to the actual victims and some how thought it was a great idea. If people aren't using the storm as an excuse or for sympathy, they are using it in order to impress the higher ups.

Oh and my girlfriend and I have been looking at it a lot and that looks like the perfect place. We looked at condo's for the hell of it and they are so much cheaper and nicer than anything you will find around here. Plus I'm still debating between teaching and tech writing. Dallas would be a step up for both of those. At least tech writing. She wants to go into publishing and they have a lot of publishing houses. The out look seems a lot nicer there than most places.
