Since when were soldiers allowed to question commanding officers or pick and choose which orders they choose to follow and I'm not talking about a blatant order to burn a village or to kill civilians?

Let me say for myself that I have extreme respect for American troops, mostly the ones that fought for our freedom in 1776(?), not the ones fighting for another countries freedom.
