What are these small looking flies?

I opened my bag of soil and I saw some small flies, I first thought that they were ants, but they weren't.

Should I put a fly catcher in my closet thats where I am currently growing? Its that sticky tap catcher thingy.

They are not too good for seedlings, but relatively harmless to mature plants. Put up your sticky trap and cover the surface of your soil with foil. If you have HPS or MH lamps be sure it's dull side up- with my CFLS and fluoros, I put it shiny side up. It seems that the gnats get confused when light comes from both "up" and "down" and they are busy looking for dark dirt to lay their eggs in. Their poor little brains can't handle light from 2 directions! They are more of a nuisance than a problem. - Granny:hippy:

Darn, that was new a bag of soil that I had gotten too. I have a zipper bag. That really sucks!

Hope my idea works(put that fly sticky trap inside the soil bag, then zip it up and wait for a week or so then hopefully they are all dead :thumbsup.

    Thanks for postin.

another thing that you can do is if you havn't planted any thing in there is to let it dry out or put it in the over at 400 degrees for 20 mins to stearlize it ....... most people will say to bake it ....... I started doing it on my second grow ....and just get the water out of the soil .... they like it damp .....baking the soil don't smell that great but with some air freshner it will be ok....

hey granny, is using foil pretty effective at ridding fungus gnats?? I have a friend with 10 dirt plants that would love to not have to deal with those little bastards anymore..

It slows them down! If any get past the foil, yes, they will lay eggs. But the foil makes a pretty big difference! Some commercial veggie farmers use it in their fields to organically deter pests. It also bounces back light on those small bottom buds.

If you want to get out the "heavy guns", I believe that there are strains of BT (bacillius thurengensius- or something like that- I medicated and it messes with my spelling) that can control the pesky little critters. BT, by the way, is NOT toxic to warm blooded creatures. It is a nasty disease of insects only. You sprinkle the power on the soil and the larva die a horrible death. Be sure to check the strain- some kinds are better for certain pests. It will say on the container. - Granny:hippy:
