First time grower, they're all dying..help!!!

I have 5 plants that are about 15 days into growth.. They are under 2-40 watt cool beam fluoros and a 175 watt mercury vapor on the side of the row, about 2 feet away from the sides of the plants. They are each in approx 1 gallon pots and im using schultz premium potting soil with 9 month slow release ferts.

I was watering every day, but the plants have recently been showing signs of decay or something.. the tips of the leaves are getting dry and discoloured.. some of the leaves are twisting a bit in the center of the leaf. There are some yellow spots on the tips and middle of the leaves too wich really concerns me.

I recently squirted a couple dabs of terracycle all purpose plant food into the plant water.. but it was so little and just that one time a couple days ago, i didnt think it would be a problem. But now my plants arent even growing anymore. I want to flush them, but i fear that if they have been overwatered, it could only make thigns worse. What should I do guys?

you should only have to water every 3-4 days, at that stage ... saturate well, then let it dry out ... do NOT add any nutes, probably will have sufficient nitrogen with that soil, until flowering, at which stage you stop nitrogen nutes, anyway ... :smokin:

Get rid of the mercury vapor- that's a streetlight. Way too much heat for the amount of useful light.

That potting soil's gonna be nothing but trouble- you have multiple things going on. You will have to water again, so you can get a run-off pH to compare to your tapwater. ( CC search engine " run-off pH"- 3rd from right on menu bar above") Don't add any fertilizer for now.

If you think you've overwatered, you probabley have.

If these weren't pricey seeds, ya might wanna just start over.

    what Rhizome said...
You are watering Way too much. Not to worry though because when I first started out... I totally did that too. Ummm if you are going to use the MV lamp, definately wait until later in the plant's life. Use CFL's for now. DO NOT feed seedlings, clones or any plant just starting out any kind of ferts. The soil you are using is shit. You may want to post pictures and if they are really bad as I suspect they probably are, you might just want to begin again with a better thought out setup. Post pics first..
    Good luck

i just gave them 48 hours w/o any water and the soil was dry, than watered them pretty good to wash out any excess ferts. One specific plant was purposely given excessive ferts as a test and now its first set of leaves are pretty much dead. I flushed the pot with about 1.5 gallons fresh water. but idk if the plant will make it. The other 4 are doing a little better now though, we'll see how it goes.

What soil would you guys recommend i use next time?

search for stinkyattic and check out her bio. She uses a very good soil mix. If i were you, I would flush them again in afew days. If you have like 60bucks. Ditch that mercury vapor. go to your local hardware store and get a over the mirror lighting fixture. Drill a hole in the back of a board and nail the fixture onto the board. pull the wires out and attach it to a plug in cord. get some V socket splitters and make a nice vegging CFL lamp. The board itself costs about 8 dollars to make, The most expensive part is the bulbs. You can make it for 30 dollars if you want to go down a size in cfl's.

here are some pics of my vegging board
