no solitary is 'jail' inside of prison.... since alot of guys are lifers, or have severe long terms (50+ years) just adding to their sentence doesn't bother them, so they had to think of something to do to them, and of course torture is out since it's highly-illegal... beating as well...

solitary confinement was the outcome...

and yeah it's horrible, it's supposed to be... it is there afterall, to detour even lifers from doing bad shit...

i don't think anyone is put straight into the hole.... but if it does happen, i'd imagine it'd be reserved for the worst of the worst, unpredictable killers who have no regaurd for life, either of others or their own.

a long ass time, lifers who fight and murder inside can expect to spend along time in solitary but i dont know what the law says,luckily i only spent a month in solitary confinement and let me tell you it blows

fighting is against the rules... they expect you to not fight back and go tell a guard....

exactly they would rather you get the shit beat out of you then defend yourself,but to get there i violated probation and pissed dirty and my luck i got the same judge i had when i was a juvenile and got all my felonies with so he felt instead of giving me a year were i would go to county jail he gave me one extra day so i could go to the penitentary what a nice guy

they put me in there with just boxers,no showers,i didnt get a haircut so i would guess no

well the place has been knwon to drive many to insanity, and many more past that point, to suicide....

perosnally i think it's one of the most inhumane things still tollerated in the US...and definately does need to be abolished... i mean i can't think of any other way to instill fear in people that would be any better so they try to stay outta trouble.... but that doesn't make the hole right.

in prisons in the u.k they have to let you have a shower at least once a week and give you some sort of exercise,last time i was in prison (17 years ago when i was a idiot) i spent 4 weeks in solitary but i had been on the run for 2 days then went back with 2ozs of hash safely in my stomach, i was quite happy to be in solitary i didn't have to share my hash with anyone, it's not as bad as you think.
