Cool Works Ice Probe for Waterfarms

I have a waterfarm setup. 4 modules, recir. with the great help of people on here. All of my temps, nutes, ppm, ph are good but it looks like I am getting root rot and its the 1st week! So, I have adding freezer packs (placed inside of ziplock baggies) to help keep the water temps down. Without I am around 72-75 deg. That shouldn't be enough to cause yellowing on all leaf edges, but it looks like it is. Upon reading posts regarding water chillers, I came across this nifty little item. You can actually drill a hole in the res. and install this cooling probe. It works off of elec. and can drop a 15 ga. setup b/w 6-8 degrees. Plus it only costs approx. $100. Has anyone used one of these? All I need is a few degrees to be happy and spending $300+ does not seem realistic. I can not put the res. outside of the room. The room temp is around 76 degrees. I could place the res. more out of the way of the light, but that would require re-doing all of my tubes and eventually when the light gets risen, the spetrum of light will eventually hit the res. So, as of yesterday, I added some hyd. perox. Sunday I will either do a res change with more hyd perox or add the hydrozyme and hydroguard. I am just suprisedof root rot already. This is my 1st attempt at the waterfarms. I have more exp. with the megagarden. Any comments would be appreciated.

I use one, its works well. I use it on a 30gal res thats insulated.

what did you use for insulation? did you purchase the controller for an extra $50 or do you just let it run full force since the power is so little? thanks for your input

I wrapped it in fiberglass insulation...kinda messy. Recently I converted a cooler into my res so its all good.

I run it on the same timer as my lights....temps will move slow so if it gets too cold just unplug it for the day and take a reading the next.

i don't think the water temp is ur problem is light gettin into the res ur res should be black or thick white plastic or duct tape as light can make it through say rubbermaid tubs and 5 gal buckets

I am pretty sure light is not entering the res. I am using the waterfarm res which is tan color. HOWEVER, yesterday I did the following:

Installed the Ice probe
Got a pink roll of insulation from HD; not the kind for the walls, its about 2 mm thin and can used in ridge vents. I wrap the insualtion around my res and 4 waterfarms. I then took blk/wht poly and warapped the res and 4 waterfarms. This will now prevent the lamp from heating up the thin plastic walls of the res & farms thereby heating up my water. Along with adding more reflection.

As of last night and this morning, my temps were down 4 degrees and the probe has not been on continously

The insulating part I feel is one of those steps everyone should consider doing if they have this system. It would seem as important as making this system recirculating and its easy

Well i have insulated my waterfarm now so wee will c how it goes i still like the sound of the ice probe though

I'll bet money res temps are not your problem. I've seen res temps MUCH higher than that using Waterfarms w/no issues at all. 72-75* is perfectly fine. The leaf yellowing is a nute issue, root rot (if u have it) I bet is from light leaks as mentioned above, but the res temps aren't the issue for sure. Best of luck.
