You're looking for a medium with no, or little nutrients in it. The reason being is because you want to add your own nutrients and anything in the medium already will become compounded with what you're putting in the water. They're called "soilless mixtures". They're technically hydroponics because the nutrients are in the water and not in the medium. However, this can easily be used with hand feeding.

If you're looking for an easy to use mix.. try a Peat based mix with a proper ratio of vermiculite and perlite. The more sterile the better.

Remember 3-5 gallon pots for mothers!

And check your pH
