What kind of soil am I suppose to be looking for?
You're looking for a medium with no, or little nutrients in it. The reason being is because you want to add your own nutrients and anything in the medium already will become compounded with what you're putting in the water. They're called "soilless mixtures". They're technically hydroponics because the nutrients are in the water and not in the medium. However, this can easily be used with hand feeding.
If you're looking for an easy to use mix.. try a Peat based mix with a proper ratio of vermiculite and perlite. The more sterile the better.
Remember 3-5 gallon pots for mothers!
And check your pH
Cheers,
Bob.

Careful, I'm not expert on weed growing, but I know sand can retain a lot of moisture and isn't the best for roots of any plant. Thats two bad things in one.

I'm gonna go with Deepsuthern on this one. The ORGANIC miracle grow compost and pearlite, is the easiest way to a healthy start. Bob is def. right about the low nute levels if you choose something else, but too much peat APPARENTLY can become a PITA.
Myself; You've been growing with sand for 5 yrs, maybe it hasnt been a 'problem' but has it done you any GOOD? I only ask because without a known benefit, why wouldnt you have dropped the sand back in the day?...Unless it's a fitness thing?
...%50 compost %50 pearlite has worked VERY WELL for me. I know the Stink factor agrees!
