Clones
I have six clones all growing using natural honey as a substitute for cloning gel.
Method in 3 easy steps
Cut clone
Dip cut in honey
Plant clone straight away in compost such as John Innes number 3.
I was extremely sceptical when I heard this for the first time but I cloned 6 and they all grew.

The answer to your question is as follows:
Yes - you can do the cloning that way, and you will "maybe" get roots to develop and you can grow from that. I would also add that as your personal experience shows that you could potentially have a large failure rate.
Now, let me add this, there are several people on here who have been doing this for a very long time, and the best success rate that they have had (keeping in mind that 100's of successful clones by people here compared to a single person posting on that method) is using exactly what they said. My personal experience is to "listen" to what they are saying, they are not saying that for the sake of uping thier post counts. If you are unsure of that person then look for the threads that they have posted on and see what advice they have given. Again, let me state that every question that i have put on here has been answered by someone who has had great success and they are passing their knowledge on, and i want to thank every single one of them, they have saved me from starting over again. The amount of investment that the solutions provided here are really not that expensive, you can find most of the stuff at walmart, agway, or your local garden store, and for the most part your talking about something that is between 10 - 20 dollars.
Hope that helps
