Depth vs Volume

After my plants outgrow their 6" pots, I had planned to move them into 3 gallon pails. My veg chamber is a little limited on height, so this might cause a problem. How well would the root system adapt if I moved them into wide but shallow pots. Im thinking only 7" or 8" deep, but 2 feet across.
My alternative would be to put them into the flowering box, which is taller.

I'd say put them in the taller flowering box.
