How exactly does a chillum work?

Just like a pipe with no carb... I have a blue one, it was my first piece. They're good for concealment and for efficiency (you can put like one or two hits in and get ALL of it all the time). They're kind of harsh though because they have no carb and the hot smoke doesn't have much space to cool. They also start to taste bad unless you wash them enough. I use my bowl now instead, but I have the chillum in case I need a compact method.
