So I went today on a whim, and bought my first piece, a lame piece, but a first none the less.

I'm pretty broke, but been wanting a bong for ages - bought myself a $20 transperant purple bong. Not too tall, kinda small, but pretty good for my "nosy" parents.

But now for two questions (never used a bong); there's a black rubbery knob on the back, what is that ? And when I'm using it, I've seen people take out the stem/bowl when the inhale, for my acrylic is it the same?

it depends how its made, Id need a description, but Im guessing that lil knob comes out and its a carb. So im guessing your bong doest have a slide for a bowl. But youll know when you smoke out of it.

Mine, is a straight bong though, I doubt that makes a difference for the knob.

You put your thumb (or finger) over that hole as you light the bowl, so its air tight.
Once the bong is filled with smoke, you release the hole and inhale the smoke. Releasing the hole clears the bong because it brings in air with it as you inhale, meaning you get a nicer hit.

Yep, you dont pull the bowl out, it will prolly unscrew to load it, thats how most of the acrylic bongs ive seen work. And yeah, a carb is exactly how WbW explained it.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, one last final question On the bowl there is a screw-off top that has a hole in it, I imagine I leave the top off and just have the bowl exposed when in use?

When your financial situation allows it, invest in a bong slide action. Carb bongs will get you high, but sliders are the gold standard.

Those kind of bongs are made so that you can have a slide or a carb system. If you want to use it as a slide you put the rubber stopper back into the carb, and put in a slide bowl. If you want to use the carb, you can keep the slide in, or you can put in a normal bowl and do it like that.
