They would repair the one he had for starters, it's a simple fix (heat sink related) however if they sent him a new one from Microsoft it is almost guaranteed to be one of the latest models which does not contain the faulty heat sink issue.

It sucks that it broke and it will suck not being able to play it for a bit, but if he gets it in ASAP he could have it back within a month and the console will better than when it was new.
last i heard (a month or so ago) they were STILL shipping out their stock of faulty units... if they're good enough to ship to the stores, what makes you think they're gonna care if they replace a broken unit with the same malfunctioning ones they're sending to stores?

forgot the link... and i can't seem to find the article i had found before... i could be wrong but i was pretty sure there was more than just heatsink (Although, they were minimal changes)
