At University, the 'smoke detectors' actually turned out to be heat detectors, and wouldn't go off if you smoked in your room. Are you sure it's not a heat detector? They look pretty similar.

I just now smoked in the bathroom with the shower running hot water, and i taped a bag around what could be a smoke detector in the bathroom. There are also two smoke detectors in the hall outside the bathroom that i didnt tape up, but i put a towel underneath the door so that no smoke could get outside the door.
