The crime level in New York City improved remarkably during Rudy Giuliani's two temrs in office as as the Mayor of New York City, in the early 1990's through 2002. It's still one of the safest large cities in the country. Crime dropped in other cities during this period as well.

^^ He definitely cleaned the place up, didn't he? I used to be scared to travel to NYC on business unless we were staying in a really nice area, which was usually impossibly expensive, and after he made things safer it was a lot better. One of my teammates got mugged getting out of a cab somewhere around Times Square and lost her purse, her laptop, her briefcase and got pretty badly hurt in the process. That was during the Ed Koch days.

Some Southern municipalities used to give their unemployed, indigent, and others a one-way bus ticket to New York City - where the promises of welfare, public housing and other benefits awaited them. Now that the parties' over, they're coming home to roost.

    Is your city dangerous?

I probably live in one of the most dangerous big cities in the world, Rio de Janeiro.

It's surrounded by favelas (slums), inhabited by the poorer classes and controlled by either druglords or ex-policemen (milÃ*cias). There's a lot of rivalry and competition and the result are endless shootouts throughout the city. Innocent people are killed every day. The police earn a ridiculous amount of money for their work, which creates widespread corruption. The poor don't rob the rich because they're evil, it's because they have no fucking chance at all. Children begging for money on the streets all the time, and the money goes to their lazy bum parents who sniff glue all day.

I'm probably friends with lots of criminals and murderers. While weed smokers usually have a lighter punishment, you can get away with pretty much anything provided you have enough money. And you absolutely need to have the right connections if you want GOOD weed... Or risk your life trying to get it in the slums... There's a wild new Brazilian movie out there called "Elite Troop", methinks it's a bit more realistic than "City of God".

This place is a fucking mess. I'd like to go live in Oz or Canada after I graduate.

Boston is somewhat dangerous downtown, like in Roxbury and Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plains, and even Cambridge projects. Lots of gang violence and shootings downtown in the hub. Towards where I live in the suburbs right outside the city, most areas are pretty safe.

Being from the Niagara Falls region, with all it's gambling and other activities it's actually pretty safe. On the other hand, if you want to find trouble, it's there. Just have to be cautious and be a little street smart.

I live in Fort Worth. For the most part I feel safe despite my car being broke into a few times, hearing gunfire at least once or twice a week and there's always some altercation at my WalMart when Im in there. It's not my first choice in places to live but I like it here. Racially diverse, most folks are cool, close to downtown.

    All cities are dangerous.
