Yeah, in most cities, and even towns, its nigh impossible to see that many stars and that clear. The lights of a city are usually so bright that it makes it impossible to see the stars, USUALLY.
But, yeah, in the country it's easy as hell to see stars like that. Where I used to live, in what I refer to a village, a town with 6,000 people, it is really easy to see the stars like that. But, where I live now is a college town, so it's a lot bigger, and seeing the stars here is pretty hard, =(.
I wanted, and still want to be, an astronomer...only problem is, you have to be a genius with math; I'm only a genius in English.

Anyway... even if i live in a huge city (10M+ people), i live in a somewhat retired area, so when the weather is dry i can see lots of stars. Even some cloud-like things that are the milky way... of course they are not like that picture, but brilliant enough for being visible.
Once i went to a place in the mountains, and did see the most starry sky i ever seen... it was awesome... like that picture... there was so much stars i couldnt even recognize the constellations... the sky wasnt black, but some very dark grey... i could see the outline of trees framed against the sky... and falling stars... lots of them... if i were given to making wishes for each one i did see, i could have all my problems solved in just one night... That was one of the most amazing nights i ever did see...

i have the coast 5mins one way and one of the largest forests in england 5mins the other way and on a clear night you can see thousands of stars, very relaxing gazeing at the stars when stoned and hearing the waves crashing against the beach.

I can see them beautifully from my house.
It's in an old, quiet neighborhood that borders on conservation land and then drops down to the confluence of two major rivers.
My house is right at the edge of the neighborhood and I love sitting on my back patio in the evenings and just enjoying the stars and the fireflies.

I grew up in the country, and spent alot of my child-hood years on my families farm. I remember getting up at 5am and walking down to the barn to feed all of the animals. It was a beautiful sight. You could see the stars awesomely from there...way out in the "cut".
Now I live in the burbs, and you can still see them, just not as well.
