Making vaporizer out of lab equipment

Is there some reason why I couldn't use a laboratory hotplate and a filter flask (it's like an Erlenmeyer flask with a tubing fitting on the neck) to make a vaporizer? I'm thinking I could attach a piece of tubing to the flask and lower the bud down into the flask with a little stainless steel basket of some kind. The only thing I'm wondering about is how to cover and vent the top opening. I think the glass would be too hot to use my hand
