Yes, you read right, you can get them for free with a little bit of effort. Plus possibly a lot of ducting if you need it.

Go to your nearest Heating Contractor that installs/replaces furnaces. Drive around the back and see what they are doing with the old furnaces. Often times, you will see their 'graveyard' full of old equipment, and they have to PAY to get rid of the stuff. When a furnace is replaced, it is generally not because the fan motor is not working, but rather that the heat exchanger has a crack in it or is rusted out.
When you find the old furnaces in their junk pile, just go in and ask if they mind if you took an old fan motor for you garage. They are generally happy to oblige, as they certainly are not interested in using it.

Don't they usually take the old furnaces to a scrap yard and get paid for the junk metal?

Good lookin' out on that post! Personally I think the site would benefit well from a section dedicated to "Junky Setups" where we could ONLY post informative leads to recycling old appliances and such, into grow materials!
...and if anyone agrees, sign my imaginary petition and Ill present it to the powers that be!

Ill sign! I think there should be a member "junk" thread that is dedicated to giving away free equipment, selling old equipment and giving tips on how to get free or close to free equipment... What do you think about that? I know I have given away old stuff that was not even used by my friends, when it could have benefited some one on here much much more!!!!

Theres a couple small problems with that, although, I like it for the most part. I dont think any kind of selling or sending of goods is gonna fly. I think to help "sell" the site space, we need a good name like "Friendly Growing" or "Junky Setups" (suggestions?)
Also need a fair amount of info to start with.
