Harry Harrison is a really good author. My personal favorite is his Stainless Steel Rat series about a super criminal in the future. Sort of a reverse James Bond in space.

I once drove across Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado while listening to Sphere on tape. Made a boring drive go by in no time.
