Our support for the Shah, a royal dictator whom we (the West) installed as their leader, and then his oppression of the people was the rallying point for anti-American sentiment in Iran.

Americans (and the other 'Western' nations) have interfered in the politics of this region since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, creating 'nations' from disparate peoples, installing puppet leaders and manipulating them ad infinitum. Americans would themselves be angry should another nation do that to us.
