Not sure what cf is but ec is electro conductivity. EC is the measurement of how strong your nute strength is. The higher your ppms, the higher your ec will be. Your ec is usually measured just a bit higher then your ppms. For example, it would be perfectly normal for your ec to read 800 when your ppm is at 450. You can use ec or ppm or both. Just keep in mind that if either one is too high, you need to add fresh clean water with no nutes. And to answer your last question of how often to check ppms. Everyday! I check ph, tds and ec twice a day now.
