Browning on seedling.. help! Pics
Hi guys, still a beginner and I'm starting my second grow..
This is my indoor seedling growing in a cab, 15 days old.
Soil: Scott's Potting Mix (0-1-0) and Perlite ~70/30 mix. 4 inch pot.
No nutes yet. Was going to add some (Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 // 1/4 tsp - gallon) next watering when she's about 3 weeks. I read when she has 4 nodes or so, it's ok to start with minimal nutes.. this ok?
I get the water from the tap, left out for a couple days. Then it's PH'd to around 6.5-6.8. Not sure of soil PH.. will test next time I water.
Lights: for now are just 3 -26 watt (6500K) CFL about 1-2 inches away.
Temps: 80-83 day, 71-73 night
Light schedule: 18/6
Humidity: ~50%
Ventilation: 1-120mm fan (49cfm) exhaust. 1-80mm fan for active intake, along with 5-2 inch holes drilled in bottom of cab for passive intake. Oscillating fan inside cab. After having TONS of vent. problems last grow, I finally got it figured out and my temps stay in a good range.
I don't think I have over watered, as I have been far more careful this time than last. She's pretty dry before she gets a drink ~ every 3 days. Or do you think I should water more?
Here are some pics. The first set of true leaves that are browned/yellow were crispy to the touch, and have kind of flaked off. This is starting to happen to my second true set right on the tips. The Cotylendons are starting to yellow, so I'm sure she will need N soon, if not now, but with the crispiness of the leaves, then browning, I'm not sure if it's N deficient or not? I'm just wondering if it has something to do with the tap water... should I try bottled?
â??Any help is appreciated!! Thanksbron.y.aur babe Reviewed by bron.y.aur babe on . Browning on seedling.. help! Pics Hi guys, still a beginner and I'm starting my second grow.. scotts soil is too hot for seedlings, contains ammonical nitrogen that the seedlings just cant handel
transplant to better soil or you can try to flush the ferts from the soil first then transplant into the leeched soil that way the plants wont get the burn or suffer from further abuse of overwatering from flushing
becareful of that fish emulsion you have ....extremely acidic, you must get some ph-up to PH correct that stuff

Browning on seedling.. help! Pics
I will flush the soil and transplant her into a new container. I would get new soil, but this week is waaay to busy to go soil shopping.
Should I add a drop of Superthrive to her watering mix after she's in her new home?
Also, my regular tap water has a PH of around 7.6. Is the fish emulsion so acidic that I will still need to get PH-up? How much will the emulsion lower my PH? Well, I guess there's only one way to find out.. I'll do a test run!
Instead of the emulsion, I have blood meal (12-0-0) that I could feed her, although I'm not sure of how to 'apply' it. Do I just mix a small amount into water and water regularly? Or is this even a good idea? I'm open to any suggestions!
Thanks GG for the help.

Don't feed ANYTHING yet.
Flush out your soil well since you can't get fresh soil right away.
When you mix your fert solution, check and adjust the pH before use- you have to anyway with tap water that high.
The compost mix in my siggy link is nearly impossible to screw up, and CHEAP... just for a possibility since you are looking for new dirt...
Blood meal is best used as a soil amendment, but wait until the re-pot at about 5-6 nodes to pot up into blood meal amended soil.

Thanks Stinky! I looked up the Agway product you listed on your soil mix, and I found a retailer close to my house! So a 50-50 mix of that manure/humus product and perlite will be a good soil medium for seedlings? What about using this medium throughout the entire grow, just adding whatever nutes I need along the way?
Appreciate the help.. I'll make a trip to the store tonight.

I've actually been using Farfard seedling mix (also at agway) for the first 2 weeks and going into that compost mix on the first repot, and using it all the way through.
I'd actually recommend 30-40% perlite instead of 50- I have to go make sure it's written that way in the manual. But it is a fine mix for all post- seedling life stages. If you want to use it for seedlings, break it up really fine and flush it once before use.
