Alarming poll
Does anyone else find the results of this poll as upsetting as I do?
One in four read no books last year - Yahoo! News
I was horrified to read this story earlier today. I normally read one to two books a week, at least when I'm not actively engaged in school. During the school year, I easily read the equivalent of one or two books per week in medical texts and other written information.

I read a lot. I love to read. I find that poll very sad, but maybe, just maybe, they are doing their reading on line?(Wishful thinking I know, but a girl can dream!) I do read actual text but I have a lot of on line libraries I visit. I probably read 1-3 books a month depending on the book.
Of course it does say older people and women read the most.(Are we older?) I can't get my husband to read a street sign much less a book!
I also raised my daughter to love reading, so she is a great reader also. I always buy her books for her birthday.
Reading Is Fundamental!

Alarming poll
I read in average 3 books a month. I usally have several books going at once. It all started with my 2nd garde teacher telling me reading would help me learn the english language better. I will always be grateful to her for that. I will read almost anything. I read the paper every morning with my morning dobbie. I don't know how many times I was asked while carrying a book in school, "Are you reading that for a class?" Then again half my graduating class had a 3rd grade reading level. Sad, but true. It's so sad to me when someone hasn't discovered the joys of literature. The worst part though, is that people, especially younger people, think that not reading is cool. Reading builds you imagination, and that is always better than staring at a tv screen all day IMHO.

I read a lot but it is mostly nonfiction DIY books these days. I love novels but rarely feel like I have time to devote to them properly.
The results of that poll are horrifying but not particularly surprising. It simply confirms what I had already suspected, which is that a disturbing number of Americans are far too intent upon predicting the next American Idol than we are upon expanding our little minds.

I just have no idea how one cannot read. I always have a book going and several waiting in the wings.
