Rant: canker sores!
The canker sore doesn't have to be caused by a bacterial infection or be infected for salt water rinses to be effective. Salt water helps shrink the mucosal membranes which can help with the helping process in addition to its antibacterial actions. I also don't think it matters whether or not it was caused by foreign bacteria or from normal flora because salt causes an osmotic shift and I don't think bacteria have a resistance mechanism to it.

Hey thanks for all your advice. I really appreciate it. The sores I have are getting better - or at least not hurting as bad.
Would marijuana help with the pain?

Actually the bacteria that's beneficial to your body has adjusted to it. Another example of natural selection I suppose, but they're quite at home in your body which is a tad saltier than the external world.

If you are trying to say that the normal flora in your mouth is immune to salt water rinses you're wrong. The salinity of most fluids in the body is only 0.9%. When you gargle with a salt water rinse it is much higher than that and normally not even normal flora can survive that just because they have been living in 0.9% salt content.

Interesting... well I don't know why salt water seems to work better than alcohol-based mouthwash then, any ideas? I just remember hearing that your body's bacteria handles the salt better than the alcohol, but the nasties can't handle it at all.

I do. I've never had one on my tongue though. That must suck! I usually get them on my gums, or between my gums and my cheeks and lips (never had them actually on the lip though).
To kill the pain I drop one or two grains of salt into the sore. It hurts like you wouldn't believe at first, but it numbs up and this helps for about an hour.

btw, I think the tongue "cankers" aren't cankers, but something else. I assume you guys are talking about when a tastebud gets inflamed, grows a lot bigger, and turns white right? I'm not sure what causes those, but a canker is actually an ulcer of the mouth.

What about anbesol? I don't know how to spell that word so I apologize. Anyway, the little tubes of numbing stuff that help sores in the mouth. I grind my teeth and in the process bite the inside of my mouth a lot and the anbesol/pain numbing stuff really helps. It's cheap too...
I am NOT avertising anbesol....unless they want to give me commission!:rasta::stoned::smokin::jointsmile:
