Hemp is usually bred to be hermaphroditic. The reason is, male and female plants grow differently, and hemp farmers want their seeded fields to grow more or less uniform.

Like you said, the cannabis was probably first grown for toking purposes.

The plants you thought were males were probably hermaphrodites, not males. Hermies would look different than females and have seeds, and you probably assumed that they were males since they looked different.

When the plants grew the next year, they probably came from seeds dropped by the plants you transplanted. With the TLC you gave them, they were probably not so stressed, and so became females.
