If I'm going to cough with a hit in my lungs, usually swallowing will buy me enough time to exhale before I cough... Coughing up a hit is a very unpleasent experience, burping up smoke is not. I'd rather burp up smoke.

But no, it does not seem to fuck you up (unless choking up a hit is a buzzkill)...
