if that leaf you got there came off a small tree then thats most likely what it was.
Japanese maples grow in the southern US in shades from bright lime green to dark green or yellow in fall. There are a very small amount of the red and purple Japanese maples though.

Cannabis leaves are always serrated in odd numbers I believe, so that is one way to tell.

There may be a few plants that one might ponder and suspect of being cannabis...

but when ya stumble on a plant that is cannabis, it is in your face obvious.

It is extremely unique looking. Sucks for farmers : (
