Planet Earth doomed in 2079
I will be 111. I hope i never see it.
The lucky ones that are within 100 miles of the impact zone will be evaporated in 1 millionth of a second. faster the a nervous system can register. The unlucky ones will be burned, or frozen in a nuclear type winter or starve to death.
Attaching a small solar sail to the comet can and will toss it off course even if you put the sail behind it and let the tail burn inside it that would generate a rocket effect and push the comet. I say let mars eat the bitch and then watch the show from the front row this time.

Tempel 1 is about 8.7 by 2.5 miles, or roughly one-half the size of Manhattan.
this one is many, many, many times bigger then the one that killed off the dinosaurs.

As for the comet, they have 72 years to figure something out, so I'm not overly concerned about that either. I actually watched a program with one plan to send a craft that will latch on to the asteroid and push it out of the way with it's own propulsion. I don't remember the distance, but they say they could move it just enough, little bit by bit, over 20 years or something.\"I think your love of the halfling\'s pipeweed has slowed your mind\"

I'll more than likely be dead by that time so I ain't sweating it.
If our technology is not advanced enough by that time to deflect it, humanity is pretty dumb.

I was just thinking.... you know how they can't just blow it up with a nuke because that would only create a few more pieces to come and smash the shit out of Earth. Soooo... what I'm thinking is, why don't they send a nuke way the hell out there, years of travel away, and detonate it beside the comet so the shockwave could change its course.
Damn, I always knew I'd save the world one day  lol\"I think your love of the halfling\'s pipeweed has slowed your mind\"
