Marijuana

Drug, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, can
be an "illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness" (M-W). In Modern society today Marijuana is classified as a schedule 1 drug. Schedule 1 drugs have high chance of abuse and no medical purpose. Marijuana is one of the most shunned plants in history or is it?
Marijuana is the dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant. Throughout life on earth its powers have been used, going as far back as the Neolithic age. Cannabis was viewed as godâ??s gift to earth. Marijuana was legal in the United States up until 1937 when congress passed the Marijuana tax act. This sudden change of mind was not because of the dangers prompted by its use but by racial tension and religion.
In 1910 Utah churches ruled against Marijuana after Mormons traveled to Mexico, Brining the plant to Utah. Laws at that time were strictly influenced by church thus making Marijuana illegal in its first state. Soon enough Marijuana was seen to make blacks go crazy and rape white women. Mexicans on Cannabis were said to snare children with cannabis.
Another strong factor was the cotton industry vs. the Hemp industry. It is not any surprise that Hemp or Marijuana has many industrial uses. This was observed in the early 1900â??s by several. In fear of loosing business, the cotton industry had to put the Hemp industry out. It didnâ??t take too long before marijuana was completely illegal in the entire U.S.
Marijuana was said to make anyone who took it go insane, psychotic, and deadly to anyone around the user. This was obviously a myth and scare tactic to keep people away from it. The definition of drug is any substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change of consciousness. The only factual thing about marijuana as a drug, in the above definition, is that it alters consciousness. Is an altered consciousness all that bad? It is not permanent. It does not make one psychotic nor does it make them deadly. Marijuana can be viewed as Marijuana just like Alcohol is viewed as Alcohol. Marijuana a drug, no, Marijuana is a plant.
The gateway theory is the theory that Marijuana leads to abuse of other drugs. The truth is that marijuana isnâ??t the gateway. The gateway is the sugar in your kidâ??s lollipop, the caffeine in his soda, the liquor in the old manâ??s stomach on the corner of the street. Why is it that Marijuana is viewed as the gateway drug? It is because we are now finding out that Marijuana isnâ??t all that bad and it needs to be vilified in any way possible. A study showed that Marijuana users were 15 times more likely to use cocaine but it failed to notice that 80% of marijuana smokers do not.
Marijuana has no medical benefits or value at all. Another stereotypical view saying that medical cannabis has no use as a medicine. Anti-Marijuana supporters promote that cannabis does not help cure any disease; which in case has no medial purpose and should be illegal. Part of fighting a disease is to have will power. A doctor telling you that you have cancer and two months to live will not give anyone will power to fight. Marijuana can give that power and show that life is worth it. Curing pain with marijuana is another huge debate. Marijuana can be used to treat pain just like prescription pain killers; which usually cause all of the symptoms of a drug in Merriam Websterâ??s definition.
Legalization of Marijuana would be one of the most embarrassments in the history of the DEA. If Marijuana was legalized then the truth would be spread about what the DEA and many anti Marijuana organizations did to mask it. Marijuana will still and is remain illegal, because of the risk of the integrity of an organization.Gorlax Reviewed by Gorlax on .
