Personally, I think the whole concept of Straight Edge is completely misunderstood. From a highschool kids perspective, alot of these "scene kids" are using it as a way to be an elitest. There are no rules to this concept. Some people think you CAN NOT drink at all, CAN NOT have premarital sex at all, CAN NOT eat red meat, and CAN NOT do drugs. Essentially, the band Minor Threat created this concept, as a means to protect the kids. The 80s in Washington D.C. was a bad area to grow up in (my half brothers did, and ones dead because of heroin, which he more than likely wouldn't have gotten addicted to if he didn't live in that area). Kids were doing hard drugs, getting addicted to pot, getting girls pregnant, and drinking themselves stupid. The concept was to protect them, saying "we don't need promiscuous sex, we don't need to fuck our brains up by drinking, we don't need speed and heroin to feel good, and we don't need dope to slow us down". The band claims its okay to have a beer with your buddies, and if you slip up, just get back into the swing of things. Even if you smoked bud for 10 years, were addicted to heroin, you could become a straight edge kid by stopping. Of course, I smoke pot every so often (18 days sober about), but I consider myself straight edge. I smoke socially, will have a drink every so often (not trying to get drunk), stay away from hard drugs, and plan on staying a virgin for quite a bit longer. The concept is meant to protect the youth, but some kids use it as a sense of elitism to be straight edge, or a way to be associated with something, and if you slip up, sometimes will judge you. "He claims to be straight edge, but drank last weekend! He's such a poser!". Well, kids like that are considered to be hardliners, meaning they're the assholes of the straight edge scene. They don't believe in anything, and not even trying it. Of course, I believe bud isn't bad for you with much moderation (as I do), because it has helped me, and I'm not addicted.

Although straight edge kids can be annoying, or gay, I think they're just confused. If you understand the straight edge concept, it's not so bad
