Back in the day my brothers best friend got herpes from his gf who he had been seeing for almost 2 years at the time. My brother used that as a horror story to the point where I'm super paranoid about unprotected sex, even when my girlfriend is on birth control....though on second thought I think that my brother just scared a whole bunch of neurotic trust issues into me

Not really an issue apparently, theres treatment for it now too, though not a complete cure (it is a virus). Wikipedia has some good stuff on it.
