House Democrats: Farm Bill to Pass
WASHINGTON - Democrats said Thursday they have the votes to pass a broad, five-year farm bill this week, despite the party's internal divisions and Republican outrage over tax increases to pay for it.
Support for the bill, which extends agriculture and nutrition programs, unraveled Wednesday as the White House threatened a veto, saying the legislation doesn't do enough to cut farm subsidies. At the same time, farm-state Republicans who previously supported the bill have said they will oppose it because of a last-minute proposal to tax certain foreign-owned companies with U.S. subsidiaries. Those taxes would partially pay for $4 billion in food stamps and other nutrition programs.
Facing defeat from a loss of GOP support, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said Thursday that he had been up most of the night working with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to gain votes from Democrats who have opposed certain parts of the legislation. Peterson and Pelosi agreed to shift money to international nutrition programs, for example, to gain support from Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass.
"My sense is there's not going to be many Democrats who vote against this," Peterson said. "We got the votes."
Republicans, though, have said they view the tax proposal by Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, as a betrayal of the previously bipartisan effort to pass the bill.
With the business community lobbying vigorously against the measure, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson wrote Congress Thursday saying the plan would cost U.S. jobs by disrupting foreign investment and ruining relations with trade partners.

Looks like more time wasted on something awaiting an eventual veto. Good job!

So... what's your answer? Should they rubber stamp all the repuke legislature as has been the case for the last 10 years, 6-1/2 at least. At least they are trying. The record will show that they tried and the Bush vetoed it, another thorn in his legacy. I've already stated here that it will be nigh on to impossible to get any legislation passed untill after the '08' elections., this is a do-nothing congress and a lame duck president. They all might as well go home and jerk off.

From an employers aspect if I had employees that spent all their working days doing non-productive things they'd be fired.
Kind of goes with the "08" elections I guess. We'll have at least one of the two houses going back to the right and unless God hits a Republican debate with a natural disaster.....we'll have another republican president to match.

Considering who's running this country at the moment - and I'm referring to all scoundrels of all stripes, I'd say we're pretty damn lucky that nothing can get passed into law. Any legislation coming out of Washington these days has "screw the average American" written all over it.

The more things change the more they stay the same. What more could we expect out of ANY politician.

I can't say I disagree with increasing subsidies for food stamps and nutritional programs. Mind you I haven't thoroughly read the whole bill, but this aspect I think is necessary considering the poor mental and physical health of the poor due to poor nutrition. This is especially exacerbated by the fact that they're currently getting only $3 a day in food stamps. Is the idea here to buy 3 $1 meals a day or what?

Remember our bet. The repukes have no chance without the voting machines being rigged, or another false flag attack dropped in Rudys lap, Neither one would surprise me and if either happens, the bet is off. The idiotic American sheeple are too dumb to know when they are being had, which brings me to the question, what about you? Do you actually believe all this nonsense being spouted by the right wing fear mongers?
