Absolutely. Would you try to pull porcupine spikes out of a pit bull while it was awake? Pit bulls have an extremely high tolerance for pain, but he'd still feel it and probably get pissed when you try to help him. And I agree with the folks that say he'll probably do it again given the opportunity.
