light heat temperatures
I was thinking about buying an hps light to start growing but was wondering about the heat. this heat wouldn't be comparable to say, a halogen light would it? those things get pretty hot. i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be anywhere near that hot but I was still pondering whether the heat will make a difference or not because the room is upstairs where it gets pretty hot.

Actually, Andy, heat in general, and lamp heat in particular, is one of the major concerns of indoor growers. Check out the FAQ section and you can learn a lot about growing.
You pretty much need to provide a micro-environment for your plants, if you want to grow good bud. Since you are growing upstairs in your room, check out closet/cabinet section and you'll discover some really ingenious ideas for growing in your room.
Good luck!

can you compare the heat given off of a 250 or 400w hps to something? i was trying to make sure its not like a halogen light because i have a halogen lamp in my room and i can hold my hand half a foot above the light and it will start getting really hot the instant i turn it on.

Halogens burn a lot hotter than an HPS. However, an HPS is a lot larger bulb and gives off more real heat (btu's ?) than a halogen. In other words, it can warm a larger area.
90F is about as high a temp as your average plant can thrive in. That's even too high for some plants. So, any lamp heat over 90F is problematic and needs to be removed from the grow area.
I've never fired up an HPS lamp outside of a cooled hood, so I couldn't tell you what to compare one to.

We have 400w HPS, and they get fucking hot.
Due to our light heat, our closet rise to 110 degrees, and its given plants heat stress to.

info on halogen lights.
I have a 250 in ~25 cubic feet.. and was trying to cool that with a 55 cfm muffin fan.. ambient temps were ~75 and in the cab would peak at around 98 sometimes... i ended up getting a 4 inch vortex and at 172 cfm and with that much cfm in my space there is really no chance for heat to build up.. but ambient temps in my spot dictate how well my cabinet stays cool... if your growing in a warm spot and are pulling in hot air... well it is what it is..
Here is some more information on lighting coverage.

To avoid any problems and maintain a proper temperature in an enclosed area you pretty much must have a Can-Fan or Flow-thru fan of some sort to remove the heat that is put off by the light. The only time you can really get away with not using a fan or ventilation in a grow room is if the light is an open space where the heat won't stay around the plant but disperse into the surrounding room.
400watts really isn't much, it's about equal or even less than the average computer power supply. The big issue with HiD lighting is the heat...
hope this helps,
Bob.
