Support for Initial Invasion Has Risen, Poll Shows

Americansâ?? support for the initial invasion of Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until at least the fall. In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said that looking back, taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq.

But two-thirds of those polled said the United States should reduce its forces in Iraq, or remove them altogether. Support for the invasion had been at an all-time low in May, when only 35 percent of Americans said the invasion of Iraq was the right thing and 61 percent said the United States should have stayed out. The latest poll made clear that a two-thirds majority of Americans continue to say the war is going badly.

However, the number of people who say the war is going â??very badlyâ?� has fallen from 45 percent earlier in July to a current reading of 35 percent, and of those who say it is going well, 29 percent now describe it as â??somewhat wellâ?� compared with 23 percent just last week.

So what is a Dem. politician to do? We were for it....but now we're against it. If the polls keep on moving they'll be for it again. LOL

Let's take your thesis for a ride in the country. Say you decide to go on a sunday drive in your new convertible, a sunny beautiful day, you put the top down and are driving along enjoying the sunshine, all of a sudden a thunderstorm pops up and it starts to pour. Do you continue on your drive with the top down or do you "change course" and put the top up to avoid the rain. Then the rain stops and the sun comes back out and it looks clear for miles, would you put the top down again, or worry about another rainstorm. Shit happens, things change. I heard on the news yesterday that something of milestone had happened in Iraq. For the first time, Suni and Shiite tribes had put aside their traditional differences and formed an alliance for mutual security in their area/region/city - whatever it was. The significance of this is obvious.

However, any reasonable person would have to question as to the impetus for this event to occur, particularly at this time. Neo-cons would argue that the "surge" is working. In a way, that could be true. The surge has simply moved the violence from Baghdad to the burbs, so maybe the more imminent threat of violence was the motivation.

There is an equally compelling argument to be made that the Iraqis see the writing on the wall - that they now believe the people of the USA are tired of this war and want it ended ASAP, fuck the consequences to the Iraqis. Perhaps their sense of self-preservation is a tad stronger than they would have us infidels believe and they can see that they had better get their shit together because we aren't going to be there to bail their asses out much longer.

Personally, I think the vocal debate going on in this country is sending a clear message to the Iraqis to get their shit together or fuck off and die. It's a message that should have been sent five years ago!

...but then, that would have been five years with no oil shortages and no record oil company profits and no trillion dollars flushed down the toilet into the cesspool of war profiteers.

Iraq is a disaster dude.

Saddam at least had the region STABLE at the time. The US just made it 10x worse already.

Aren't we well over 3000 deaths now in Iraq? It is clear that those people can't get along and we can't make them.

They will have hard time selling the Iran invasion. The basis of war with Iraq has been proven to be lies. Why should we believe them about Iran? The American media can surely twist the Iranian president's words. They'll need a new 9/11 definitely, to invade Iran.
