Im out of smoke. Can i clip off a bud from a plant...

I do it with my veggies but never the bud. If I accidentally break a branch. I make a clear cut on the plant. I bring branch in and lay on my tv, after about 18 hours ready to smoke. My dog ate a bud once. I do occassionally cook with bud, but that is like once in a blue moon.
