Sorry for your lack of sleep, nothing makes you feel out of "yourself' then a lack of restful sleep and REM. Cannabis has been documented, Herrer's Emperor wears no Clothes, etc., to treat both insomnia and anxiety atttacks, although among a small % of people Cannabis actually causes anxiety attacks. I would say for both ailments to find a strong organic Northern Lights or Hashplant, or other Indica. Sativas can have the potential of causing heart rate acceleration and paronia which wouldn't be what you are looking for. Take a small inhaled hit and then wait 10 minutes, take another hit and then sit quietly listening to some quiet music that you really like. Many people trying herb for the first time are done a disservice by old timers who have them smoke too much the first time and then get them stone sick. Take deep breathes afterwards until you take that deeep breath that causes you to go into relaxed breathing, we all know the sensation like after you sigh. As you get used to the sensations the effects will change, or rather your perception of it, and yet the theraputic effects will remain. Cannabis is unusual in that for those who use it continuosly, like for pain management, find that the theraputic effects remain though a tolerance builds up to the high itself.
If you don't want to smoke or looking for slower longer effects than making brownies would be the solution.
All the Best

Marijuana in lower doses will help you with insomnia. Higher doses may keep you awake.
You could also try meditation, which naturally raises melotonin levels in your brain.
