The T number mainly denotes how wide the tubes are, in eighths of an inch. T8 = 8/8 = 1 inch in diameter. T12 = 1.5 inches. The brightest ones are actually T5 (5/8 of an inch) though, because you can cram them really close together for more total light.

yeah. personally i use T12s just because they're cheap, i have the lights already, and the amount of light they emit is adequate. The only reason T5s are better is that you can fit more of them over your plants for more total light. They are a bit more efficient as well, but the difference isn't that great.

I second the use of T12 also ... when I was using fluorescent tubes, I did the math, and just didn't see the 'lumens per dollar' by going to the more expensive T5 ... maybe prices are better these days, I don't keep up with it ... you can do a lot of comparison shopping here: Light bulbs, Rope Lights, Halogen and Fluorescent bulb - 1000-Bulbs - The Light Bulb Superstore
by clicking on the details buttons, etc., you can learn quite a bit ...

i no one thing when you open the top of the box and look in there its brighter than outside and after looking in there everything looks dark as hell

im sure youve noticed the inside plant is a hole lot healther aint it.

every thing i say here is a lie just like the user name on the internet and just a lonely person who likes to talk about everything im on message boards everywhere

Khronik and Reaper: You can find ballasts and bulbs for t8s that are just as cheap as t12s and smokinbuds has made a good observation they seem to penetrate the plant greater than t12s.

For my next vegetation, I'm probably going to build my own T8 fixture out of wood. Still, the cheap shop lights I have can only be used with T12 bulbs, and any other lights are twice as expensive as these.
