I'm a soil guy also, but that sounds like that may be it. As far as the leaves go....I'm not sure.

Im growing in a very small area, a pc tower !! so i have to use DWC. I took my time to make sure everything was rite ph, ppm, air vents fans, air pump, light, and about 4 weeks into my grow my plants just stopped growing then my tanks started going green, like algea growing so i cleened my tank for the second time that week and the roots just started breaking!! meaning broken roots dead plants? i think so!
