you need to shoot for atleast 50 watts per sq ft or more so a 5 by 5 area is really to large for a 1000 at only 40 watts per sq ft, and a 3 by 3 area is to large for a 400 at 44 watts per sq ft.
there really isnt much of an advantage to use one over the other, but a 1000 has alot better intensity at almost 3 times the lumens of 1 400 in a sog its probably not going to make much of a difference in yield, wich ever way you go if you decide to use 400 you will need to keep them as close as possible other than that its just alot simpler to use one lightin my opinion.
most reflectors will cover a rectangular room if you position it so the sides of the bulb which give off the most light is lighting the long side of the room and the socket and end of the bulb is lighting the short side of the room if you didnt have the reflector in the right position it may not adequetly light 5 ft.
