The entire first season of Gunsmoke, all 39 B&W half-hour episodes from 1955, is coming out on DVD next week. It's still an excellent adult Western with strong performances, good guest-actors and, fine story-lines, of course, plenty of action. Some of Gunsmokeâ??s early yearsâ?? openings had a bad guy being shot down dead in the street by Marshall Matt Dillon (James Arness), but that scene was later changed because of complaints that it was too violent. The later color one-hour episodes, frequently shown on cable TV, are nowhere near as good as the first few seasonsâ??.
