Funny, for an ethics class I took while I was a cadet at the Goast Guard Academy, I participated in the same debate. As a woman -girl, actually, only 18...- going into a military career, I was on the other side. As an adult, I think I'd take your position- separate units make a bit more sense- seeing how aldult men DO often let emotions take over, at least in part, when it comes to protecting women- something a young girl is not necessarily aware of. And that isn't an ideal situation. Protecting your comrades is a given, but protecting one over another because of her gender is wrong, and almost insulting.

i hate arguing. one of my best buds who i toke up with LOVES to argue - but he is just dead wrong 80% of the time (or at least by my watch
) - and we always end up in heated yelling matches because he never admits that he's wrong.
he's also a TERRIBLE liar, and when we call him out on shit he will act like he's telling the truth or that WE'RE retarded and argue with us some more. pretty frustrating

I find just putting them in the situation you're arguing for, you know, hypothetical thing works well.
