Funny, for an ethics class I took while I was a cadet at the Goast Guard Academy, I participated in the same debate. As a woman -girl, actually, only 18...- going into a military career, I was on the other side. As an adult, I think I'd take your position- separate units make a bit more sense- seeing how aldult men DO often let emotions take over, at least in part, when it comes to protecting women- something a young girl is not necessarily aware of. And that isn't an ideal situation. Protecting your comrades is a given, but protecting one over another because of her gender is wrong, and almost insulting.

I think the purpose of a good healthy debate is to sow the seeds of new ideas in the minds of the opponent. You will rarely change their mind on the spot, but somewhere down the road, they might face a situation that reinforces your position, giving it more power and legitimacy, and altering their view.
