Do you have holes drilled in the bottom?
Search through my recent posts for stuff on 5 gallon pails... they are great but present problems for a grower indoors.

3/4 inch holes are kinda big - your marbles will all fall out and after a while you'll have lost all your marbles.

    :S2:

Just a little levity to welcome you back kid.

BTW - Read Stinky's post very carefully and do exactly as she instructed you. One way that you will learn around here is to learn to follow instructions.

    Good luck

Well to save you a bit of hunting, here;s the thing...
5 gallon pails have a ridge under. It blocks drainage even WITH holes.
Holes in the sides TOO are helpful for drainage and aeration.
Pharma is laughing because you are going to be losing your marbles... ba da BING hahaha
MArbles are unnecessary. As long as the SOIL stays in there, you're fine. I drill 5/8" holes in the sides sometimes... but i think half inch is about right... no big deal on hole size, better too big than too small though and 1/2" on a big pail like that is TOO small!

Yes, it's almost a necessity. I would never grow in a 5 gallon pail without side holes, or even a 3 gallon pail. If you look at the pots that commercial greenhouses use, the holes are at the edge so there's always a bit exposed to the air.
