Yes, in small towns there is nothing to do. We would skateboard all day, start boozing up at around 6 or 7 p.m, then by 10 p.m it was fight time. We didn't beat each other blood hungry animals, but come Monday morning, you know you'd been in a fight.

He gets caught up in the "soccer"(silly term) or football scene, with the boozing, and fighting. Lots of fighting. Great movie based in England (of course), Manchester.
