A shell theme shouldn't take up any extra memory, or nothing noticeable anyway. If you use themes that require 3 party programs then you will notice the difference sine they need to run in the background. Not a good idea to use them in my honest opinion, they use RAM and CPU power, they will also use your battery power quicker and slow down your boot up since they run automatically on start up.
