Amsterdam Hotels

I know this has been discussed before and I did search the posts but couldn't really find the info I was looking for, hopefully I did not miss it. Iâ??m planning on going to Amsterdam in a few months and Iâ??m wondering what hotel I should book. Last time I was there I stayed at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Dam Square and every time I smoked there I wondered if I was going to get kicked out of my room if someone smelled it in the hall or something so I acted like I was in a dorm back in college when I smoked (towel under door, lit cigarette in ashtray a few feet from the door, head out window (lol), it made me nervous). I emailed them when I got back pretending I was considering booking them for an upcoming trip to get their policy and they said it wasnâ??t allowed anywhere in the hotel. They didnâ??t say what they do if they find you smoking. I kind of assume that if youâ??re paying all that money and are not acting like an asshole theyâ??ll just ignore it.
I donâ??t want to stay in a place like The Bulldog or The Greenhouse Effect because they look kinda crappy and Iâ??ve read too many bad reviews of them. (Bulldog says they donâ??t allow smoking of anything in the rooms themselves anyway.) On the other hand I donâ??t want to book an expensive place like Sofitel Grand Amsterdam and get â??askedâ?� to leave. Anyone know of a good place, in close proximity to the red light district, that I should check out? The best I could find is Amsterdam Escape Apartments but they are a little more than I would prefer to spend. Currently Iâ??m contemplating just chancing it at the Swissotel Amsterdam (emailed them the same as the Krasnapolsky and they didnâ??t even respond.) in Dam Square or Sofitel The Grand Amsterdam on Oudeezijds Voorburgwal.
This probably seems like a stupid question because of all the nice places youâ??re definitely allowed to smoke at that they have there and it probably makes me sound like I just want to sit in my hotel room getting high the whole time (which is not the case). The reason Iâ??m so concerned about staying in a place that doesnâ??t care if I smoke in my room is because Iâ??m traveling alone and donâ??t want to have to be wandering stoned down unfamiliar streets late at night with no one to look out for me. I did some searching here and on google and I couldnâ??t really find anything but I figure there are probably a few people here who have been in this situation. Any input would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I love the Hemp Hotel. Not cheap but nicely done. The Eden Hotel will allow smoking(it's a best western!!), as will many other 3 star hotels. Hostels do not like smoking for danger reasons. The best way is to rent a room for a night or two and then walk the streets between 8 and 11 am. Look for the double dutch door and if the top half is open stop and inquire about rooms. I have gotten some fantastic deals from locals renting rooms for a night or three. They do not take reservations ( except for return customers) and it's strictly first come. However a room for 5 with it's own full bath and a breakfast from heaven for 100/night was worth getting up and walking around for.
So book one or 2 nights then look for something else. Weekends are packed but tuesday through friday is much easier

Wife & I always stay at the Hotel de la Haye @ Leidsegraht 114- just off the Leidseplein, right behind Melkweg.

Good prices, great atmosphere- If you're going w/ a group, grab room #3- incredible view from the balcony.

I'm going to look into the hotels that you suggested but I think they are a little way from where I wanted to be, I already pulled a few of them up on google maps. It's not a big city so who knows what I'll do though. I sent some more emails and this time everyone responded, they all said it wasn't allowed. I guess I should just stop being so picky, just going there should be enough.

doctor G, I read your posts and I like your idea but I would prefer to have everything arranged before I get there. It does sound like a good idea and and great way to try out a few places as well as maybe save some money so maybe in the future, likely when I have someone to go with.

Looking for something just outside the Red Light District. I'm told it's probably not the best place to stay but the worst I had to deal with last time was a couple of panhandlers and street dealers. Pretending you don't speak english seems to take care of them, not one tried speaking in any other languages after I ignored them or gave them a puzzled look (I'm sure they could tell I understood them though.). Last time I stayed at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and I thought it was a pretty good location.

I thought that may have been the case. I like to stay in the nicer hotels and figured they would say it's not allowed for that reason but not bother me because of all the money I spent or not want to put up with me and kick me out, probably without refund, because it is an upscale place.

So far an apartment, Amsterdam Escape Apartments to be specific (Anyone ever stayed here? I read a bunch of reviews on tripavisor and it seems like a pretty good, albeit expensive, place to stay.) seems to be my best bet but also my most expensive option. I'm not going until October so I still have some time to think about it but I want to book soon.
