Over 50% dead you may trim off. I don't even do that... if they come off with only a gentle tug, THEN take them off because the plant is finished using them.
Luckily cannabis is a plant not plagued by tons of weird viral diseases, and most leaves that LOOK diseased, it's a fertilizer, watering, or soil problem. They don't have to be removed; in fact, the plant can take nutrients out of the leaf to put energy into new growth.

if you want to remove a leaf for extra light penetration, etc. even if the plant isn't finished with it, remove only bits of it at a time, over a series of days. No severed leaf will stunt growth if you cut it off in increments

I should think that is more stressful actually.
I'd go with the tying-back method.

Absolutely tying down is the best method for light penetration alone. I was typing more in terms of if you have to remove a leaf for some reason, it's best to do it incrementally. I'm quoting Greg Green from his cannabis grow bible.
Don\'t smoke cannabis to relieve anger, but rather as a reward for working soberly through anger.
Life is too entertaining for higher powers not to be watching closely.
A rule really only needs to be followed by those who do not know why it is a rule.

I wait till they fall off just by touch .
I tuck extras in to expose budsites = no stress .

BTW - Don't listen to anything this asshole sez - s/he has never grown a plant long enough to have a dying leaf.
